Fraction strips are an essential manipulative to help my students learn the basics, as well as the more complex math concepts involving parts of a whole. We use these manipulative pieces often, and they are helpful, and fun for my students to use. The students are able to work with their peers and practice their social skills in working together to solve problems. We have a large class, and students are not always able to have their own set of strips. If each student had a set to use, they would be able to explore and draw their own conclusions at their own pace. It would also allow students to work together to model fractions greater than one whole. Sometimes my students might also need to be able to sit with the teacher in a small group setting to be able to grasp the concept they are being asked to learn. It would be very helpful for the student to be able to come to the small group table and have a stool already there for them rather than having to bring their own chair. These items will benefit my class as a whole in remediating and learning the math concepts that will help them be successful.
