My students have developed a project called "CommuniTea," a weekly class gathering focused on the love of reading and community building. We begin with a book chat--every student shares what they're reading and what it means to them with their table mates. We then discuss a social-emotional topic related to our read-aloud book, followed by a guiding question related to our classroom community. Students are in charge of the process from start to finish, preparing and serving the tea themselves. They now wish to expand the project to connect with our unit study. Our class is currently studying the food supply chain and the history of agriculture--an interdisciplinary, inquiry-based unit, which they hope to connect with their interest in tea and baking. Students have particularly been intrigued by ancient Mesopotamia and the roles wheat and bread played in the rise of civilization. They want to learn to make sourdough bread, fascinated that it requires only water and flour! The mason jars, flour, and proofing baskets, and Dutch ovens are the supplies we will need for this endeavor. North Carolina State's Wild Sourdough project will be a framework for our study of microbes. We will also research the history of tea and cultural customs throughout the world. CommuniTea is a beloved ritual, and students want to share it with other classes, teachers, and staff in our school community. The supplies listed in this project will help them achieve their goal of serving larger numbers of people at once, and will also connect this literature and social-emotional-based activity to science and history studies.
