As a special education math teacher, I am currently working with special needs students in the after school program. Due to COVID-19, many of my students missed out on educational time. After-school recovery services aim to provide students with additional supports to ensure that their educational needs are met. Working with middle schoolers has its fair share of difficulties. One of the greatest obstacles with this age group is low motivation. Low motivation affects their progress within the classroom and affects their ability to meet their academic goals. My students are highly motivated by their favorite snacks, however, since many of them come from low-income homes, they are unable to bring snacks to after-school. Increased motivation will lead to greater success within the classroom. I hope that I am able to surprise my students with all of their favorite treats!
