My students will directly benefit from a calming area in the classroom by having a personal spot like a bean bag to practice positive self-redirection when feeling angry and overwhelmed due to the chaotic, emotional and physical traumas experienced by their environments during distant learning or lack of distance learning the past year and a half. They have so much hope but feel lost and make poor choices when expressing anger and frustration in a classroom setting. Poor peer interactions and stability for so long have created an explosive learning environment and this calming area is much needed to help keep students in the classroom and able to return to learning quicker.
