What was your favorite book when you were a child? When posed this question, my students answers range from Charlotte’s Web, to Junie B. Jones, and even to Nancy Drew. Chances are, most people would answer the question with a title of a fiction book, a favorite novel. I doubt many would answer with a non-fiction title! Many students have difficulty utilizing non-fiction materials mainly due to lack of exposure. The layout, writing style, and reading level of non-fiction materials can be quite challenging to a middle school student. Because of these challenges, I wish to expand the small non-fiction classroom library in my classroom. My requested titles are high-interest topics which are pertinent to our study of United States History and the use of primary resources in the classroom. I believe this exposure to non-fiction and biographical materials will encourage students to continue utilizing these resources for years to come. Your involvement will ensure that my students gain the reading skills which have lagged due to the pandemic. I have included titles with varying grade levels for reading sufficiency so that all students can utilize our classroom library. Your help will certainly make a difference!
