The materials in this project are selected to give students the opportunity to see and care for a real aquaponics system. This will give them a chance to learn first-hand about nutrient cycling and sustainable agriculture. The aquaponic system will be the centerpiece in a Project-based Learning unit in which students design an aquaponic system. For this unit, we will be visiting a community garden with such a system, and learning about the things an ecosystem needs in order to flourish. Finally, they can put together and maintain this system, and watch food grow! Because this system can be used for years, future classes will also have the opportunity to learn about nutrient cycling and caring for an aquaponics system. It will be a centerpiece of learning about the environment for many years to come.
