We will use these materials to create classroom simulations like a Trench Warfare (WWI) activity. For example: we will divide our classroom into two sides with a gap in the middle. Then, we will use construction paper (black&brown) as artillery, and yellow as mustard gas. Students will then be divided into teams and told to make sure they ration their weaponry since we will have more than one battle. In addition to our Trench Warfare simulation, we will also have a Great Depression simulation where students are given a specific amount of money, and a variety of scenarios they have to work through as a "family." They will find they do not have the money to feed all of their children, or they must choose not to have children, or even possibly give them up for adoption to a more well-to-do family. This is competitive and eye opening activity for the students that they enjoy! We will also create political posters and cartoons, use poster sized post-its to help us de-construct primary source documents, and use Teacher's Pay Teachers to help me to discover additional hands-on activities my students will enjoy and help them to create a love for history and government!
