I have been a Math teacher for 10 years. Next year I will teach in self contained class of 4th graders. I do currently have a classroom library with a variety of fiction and non-fiction titles. Kids often have time to browse my shelves when the library is closed due to adult absences or duties for lunch. What I soon realized what that kids couldn't read the books on my shelves. With the past two years of Covid, the reading levels of the students I see are not as high as the books I have to offer them. So I embarked on a personal project at the beginning of a blizzard in Oklahoma. As I was labeling books during the snow days, I discovered most of my good books are at too high levels for my post-pandemic learners. I need some 2nd grade and 3rd grade level high interest books. I also need to increase the number of non-fiction books I have since I am reading next year. The following reading objectives could be met by increasing the number of lower level, high interest fiction and non-fiction titles in my classroom. 4.2.F.2 Students will orally and accurately read grade-level text at a smooth rate with expression that connotes comprehension 4.2.R.2 Students will compare fiction, poetry, and nonfiction to distinguish various genres. 4.3.R.7 Students will distinguish the structures of an informational text: ● cause/effect ● problem/solution ● description ● sequential 4.3.R.3 Students will find textual evidence of literary elements: ● setting ● plot ● characters (i.e., protagonist, antagonist) ● characterization ● conflict Increasing the number of books that are more on my students' reading level will make them more comfortable not only in choosing books from my classroom library, but feeling more confident in finishing books on the appropriate level.
