My students have had to navigate much online learning since the pandemic began. Now that we are back to in-person learning, I could use The World Book Encyclopedia 2022 for more traditional assignments that involve printed encyclopedic reference tools. My students would love opportunities for more hands-on activities, such as exploring reliable and concise information found in a print copy of an encyclopedia. While it might be "faster" to do a quick online search, they are bound to encounter various topics that interest them while flipping through the pages. Units that require the use of The World Book Encyclopedia will shift from an online search for information focus that often results in a lack of attention to detail and accuracy to using a general reference tool in print that sparks interest in other areas through discovery. For example, when students search online for a specific U.S. President, such as Abraham Lincoln, they usually type his first and last name; when they search for the same president in the World Book Encyclopedia, they will learn that they have to search for his last name first!
