The supplies I am requesting will give my students the opportunity to learn functional cooking skills. Alternate academic standards are taught through the Unique Learning System curriculum. Cooking lessons are embedded in each monthly unit. I have brought my personal mixer and other items to complete the cooking section of the lessons. My students have made the following recipes: Constitutional Stew during a unit on Government and Celebration Cake during a unit on Physical Science. This month's unit is on History. They are learning about people who made a difference in American History. The will cook Easy Jambalaya. Cooking in the classroom keeps my students engaged. They learn about nutrition and food safety. They build Math, Science, Literacy and Fine Motor skills. Cooking helps develop problem-solving skills. When we double the recipe they work on adding fractions and multiplying by 2. When the recipe is introduced in a lesson they ask "are we cooking this on Friday"? They remain focused on the weekly lesson.
