As a result of the pandemic, our students are struggling to stay on target more than ever before. I have recently been doing research on Mastery Based Classrooms and schools. These schools and classrooms are unique in the sense that the students have control of their own learning pace through classroom centers. Each unit starts out with a video recorded and uploaded by their own teacher that introduces the unit and walks the students through the lesson. Once the students have watched the video and answered a few "exit ticket" questions showing they have understood the content, the are able to move on the a different area of the classroom to work on applying what they have learned through a series of assignments and projects to show mastery. This second area is where the teacher will spend most of their time, working one on one with each student to make sure they understand the content and helping them with mastery. When the student has shown mastery on two projects/assignments, they will move on to the assessment center will they will be tested on their mastery of the standard. If they pass, they have the option of starting on the next standard by returning to the lesson center OR they may return to center number two and work as a "tutor" to help students who may still be struggling. If they do not show mastery, they return to station two to figure out where they struggled and to fix any mistakes that may have kept them from showing mastery. This grant will ensure my students are equipped with the best tools to help them with mastering content, as well as tools that will help them overcome anxiety while returning to learning, and stay focused on the task at hand.
