The sculpting tools I have requested will assist my young artist with hands on learning opportunities to create a sculpture bust in the style of the contemporary artist Murjoni Merriweather. I have chosen this artist for Black History Month because many of my students can identify inside and outside of the classroom with her and her artistic style of using hair in her sculpture pieces. All of my students, especially those from other ethnicities, will have the opportunity to explore and learn about the cultural creativity many African Americans experience with their hair being a source of beauty and a symbol of pride. My students will also experience creating a 3-D art piece that is representational of someone they may know or imagine getting to know.
