As educators, we are finding that open ended play is a wonderful tool to help enhance the concepts that are taught in the classroom. We use center time to help students transition to a more relaxed learning environment that builds on the ideas and concepts that are taught in a more traditional setting. Through open ended play, we are helping students find their voice and helping them explore different opportunities that might interest them. For example, some students might find themselves drawn to dolls and cribs. They can learn skills that help them interact with other students. Some might even experience skills that teach about caring and helping others. Some students are drawn to the veterinary center. It speaks to their love of animals and they learn responsibility and recognize the needs of those around them. The wonderful thing about these centers is the possibilities are unlimited. It provides a very relaxed way for instructors to observe their students in a minimally invasive way. Play opens the door to the love of learning!
