My project, Changing our Futures, will allow students to understand the essential skills of making change and paying with cash. Using realistic money will help students recognize the denominations and create awareness handling money to pay for everyday necessities. Changing our Futures will also allow students to understand how to make change if they wish to work in retail situations. My goal will be to use the simulated money to create a store-like center in the classroom where students are able to model purchasing items and determine correct change. Students will build confidence in using their math skills to calculate tax and tips and will be able to use the white boards on which to complete calculations as we practice. I will be able to create realistic sales tags using the colored paper and give students a more hands-on, real life experience. My students need to understand calculations involving money are extremely important life skills and the best way to accomplish this will be through a hands-on center while interacting with classmates..
