The materials listed in this project are intended for use in the classroom geology laboratory to facilitate inquiry and investigation into the processes and materials that form and continually reform our world. Previous students taking this class have had limited access to some rock and mineral specimens along with a rough collection of mixed and improvised geology tools. This project is meant to bolster our small lab specimen collection and enhance student group lab experiences. The lab geology specimens help students learn the physical and chemical properties of earth materials, teach them skills in observing their characteristics closely, and help them prepare for the varied field experiences that are a part of this class. In the field, students apply their learning from classroom instruction and laboratory experiences. They learn how to break down complex problems and work together as a team to accomplish specific goals during their field experiences. In addition to their practical uses for learning, these specimens make the class a more hands-on and enjoyable experience for students. They allow the class to do geology rather than only learn about it.
