Due to the area our school serves and the challenges of home (i.e., gangs, drugs, guns, etc.), students rarely are allowed to go play outside. Often their only chance to run and play with other kids occurs while they are at school. Unfortunately, we only have one playground that serves over 550 students which is frequently utilized by the younger students in grades PreK-2nd. Students in 3rd-5th grade don't have the opportunity to go outside while at school, or are asked to stand around in a field when they do. Sometimes, this can cause fights among the students, because there aren’t any activities for them to do. Teaching simple life skills like teamwork or even how to be a good sport is so critical. Purchasing playground equipment is a simple fix that would help over 300 students and truly make a difference in their lives. I have worked in education for over 30 years and have never seen an elementary school set up in this manner with students having limited access to playground equipment and resources. Any donation would be incredibly appreciated!
