I teach reading to 4th-8th Grades. We will use the books that have been selected (Missing May, Walk Two Moons, and others) to give read together, giving students an opportunity to improve their skills as they read and discuss the books. My reluctant readers will be encouraged to get involved in reading the award-winning books. They often choose books for the number of pages rather than the content of the story. Reading enough to get "into" the book will not be an issue for students when they read with classmates books such as Where the Red Fern Grows and King of the Wind.
