I serve a demographic of 2nd grade students that were in Kindergarten when Covid shut down schools and forced online learning. The demographic I serve qualifies for 100% free or reduced lunch students with limited resources at home for internet and device. Over a third of the students in my classroom are English language learners and identified as struggling readers. Covid has negatively impacted their literacy instruction forcing their 2nd grade year to move all science and social studies to the back burner to allow for additional literacy instruction to bridge gaps in learning to these shut downs. I would use the requested books to integrate science texts into my protected literacy block.
