The students I serve in the junior high setting need support in acquiring and using speech and language concepts so that they can better access their curriculum. The materials I've chosen for students who need support with their speech sounds, such as the vocalic /r/ bingo and sound bank mirror, are excellent materials to support students' acquisition of the correct /r/ sound because they are motivating and engaging. My students require support to learn strategies that help them better understand the academic vocabulary and meaning of text that they are reading. By donating to our project, you will not only help increase student engagement and motivation, you will also help improve student achievement. The context clues and inferencing materials I've chosen are engaging and a way to break up the monotony of therapy while still addressing needed areas of growth. The other materials I've chosen will allow for student groups to initiate and maintain conversations about various topics, helping them to strengthen their conversational skills that will be needed as they progress into high school and vocational endeavors. Elementary therapy rooms are often brightly colored and decorated, while junior high and high school therapy rooms are often a lifeless, boring space. This is often due to secondary speech therapists being given whatever tiny space happens to be available at the school. I am lucky enough to be in a dedicated room, but I want my students to have the benefit of coming to a welcoming, well-decorated space that makes them excited to come to the speech room.
