My students come from a variety of backgrounds, ethnicities and socioeconomic settings. Social-emotional learning and helping students connect to and find themselves in the content I teach is at the forefront of everything I do. This project consists of a wishlist of diverse books, especially graphic novels, I hope to add to my classroom library to benefit all of my students and aid them in literacy as well as social-emotional learning. My hope is to connect every student to books they can see themselves in. Apart from silent, sustained reading, I always incorporate new and inclusive writing samples in my lessons. To do this effectively, a variety of texts and perspectives are absolutely vital. Further, I hope to engage reluctant readers and teach inference and critical thinking and communication skills by incorporating more graphic novels into all aspects of my curriculum. With this inclusive list of graphic novels and current young adult literature, I will be able to connect to and aid the literacy and continued learning of more students.
