As a science educator who teaches zoology, chemistry, and physical science I have requested a wave apparatus, binoculars, two aquariums, and a chemistry lab set that can be interchangeably used in all three courses that I teach. These items will be of great benefit to our students, and will allow hands on learning to supplement the curriculum that I have been building as a new teacher at the school in which I instruct. Recent research has emphasized the need for science courses to be taught from a hands on approach for optimal student learning. As an educator who concentrated her doctoral studies on this exact topic, I understand the necessity for quality lab exercises that will help to fill the academic gaps during the COVID era. For many students who spent time at home distance learning, we need to be more proactive at helping students understand the scientific method from an applied perspective, and not simply reading it in the books. By observing natural phenomena utilizing the materials I have requested, students will be able to observe organisms and scientific concepts, form hypotheses, and test them in our laboratory setting.
