We use personal whiteboards almost daily in our math classroom, but this project will allow for whiteboards to be installed on the walls for group work. There is a lot of research in educational circles about the use of VNPS (Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces) and how they relate to student thinking, engagement, and time on task. In general, if students are standing at a whiteboard, they are likely to be more engaged compared to passively sitting at their desk. The non-permanent quality of whiteboards means that mistakes can easily be erased and students are more likely to try something to solve the problem, even if they aren't right. My goal is to build a "Thinking Classroom" where students are engaged in curricular and non-curricular tasks using the whiteboards as thinking spaces to explore the mathematics around them.
