I teach in an inclusive classroom, with many different levels of readers. Reading reluctance is something every High School English teacher has fought, since the first time someone thought to hand a teenager a book and tell them to read it. But, it's gotten significantly worse since COVID. Students have spent a lot of their time at home not reading. The idea of sitting and staring at a book for an extended period of time genuinely stresses them out. Flexible seating is always something that has helped with this. But couches, pillows, and blankets are no longer options because of germ-spread. I believe that by adding more easy-to-clean flexible seating options to my classroom, the reading stress students developed during the course of this pandemic may be relieved a little bit. Already, when I ask students to read, they hurl themselves on the floor with their jacket as their pillow, or go steal a cozy chair from the school library. To them, proper reading happens in a safe comfortable space. I think that adding more options like this in my classroom will make more students willing to pick up their book. Or at least do it just so they can quickly claim one of the bean bags. The great thing about the bean bags I've selected is that they are vinyl. I can wipe them off between each class, just like we do with other classroom seating. A new seating area would reinvigorate students to do something that some of them used to genuinely love.
