Our school is diverse by design, so we have student of all kinds under our roof. Our students are of different races, practice different religions, have different family dynamics and have lived different experiences. Some have experienced trauma and therefore struggle with regulating emotion and creating strong interpersonal relations and need a safe, quiet place to help them cope with their feelings. We use trauma based practices to interact with our students and de-escalate them when they're upset, one of them being our Restorative Justice Center. At our school we replace commonly used discipline practices with restorative justice practices that allow us to dig deeper on the behaviors and educate our students by restoring relationships. Our students love cooling down in our Restorative Justice Center where they can meditate, color, use a weighted blanket, listen to music, or just relax in the chill zone with some fidgets. These items will help create a a relaxing environment and help our students navigate through whatever emotions they are experiencing.
