The larger sets of books will be used in Literature Circles and the individual books will be added to our classroom library. For the Literature Circles, there will be 4-5 small groups of students with each group reading a different novel. First, I will give each class a preview of each book. Then, each student will be allowed to choose which book they would like to read by ranking them 1-5. I will do my best to give each student their first or second choice. Once each student has been paired with a book and a reading timeline has been established, we will break up into small groups for discussion a few times a week. These books will help my students build a sense of community and self-reliance. Connections with one another through the Literature Circles will serve to form bonds between students and enhance their social skills. The independent reading books will connect them with characters who face challenges and overcome strife.
