We live in a rural area with limited internet service. The majority of our students are low income, so when COVID hit, their education was severely impacted. Two years later, we're still seeing the repercussions of this. My incoming freshmen students will not have had a "normal" school year since their 6th grade. This is a travesty. Through reading, my students can escape the day-to-day pressure and insecurity they face in this new world of uncertainty. As a foreign language instructor, I have the ability to take them beyond the confines of their classroom, town, state, even country to different parts of the world. Reading literature in the target language not only helps develop their fluency, but opens their world view. In a group that doesn't possess the means to travel much, if at all, this is a huge opportunity for them.
