Research has shown that clay dust can be harmful to the lining of the lungs when frequently ingested over time. Providing students with easily washable, smooth, nonporous mats for clay will greatly reduce the inevitable clay dust and residue that accumulates in cloth or canvas covered surfaces traditionally used when rolling out and working with clay. Considering all the respiratory problems associated with Covid, improving air quality and health in the classroom is vitally important for both students, teachers, and custodial workers alike. Frustration levels run high when trying to learn a new skill and complete a project with inadequate or less effective tools, especially for the already stressed or anxious student. The new clay mats, modeling tools, banding wheels, and tile cutter, can help eliminate some of this frustration and help boost the confidence and skill level for many of my students as they problem solve and figure out the best ways to approach their projects and ultimately their own success when working through challenges with the right tools. Mats and modeling tools for clay work could also be taken home, making hands on learning more accessible for the increased number of on-line learners with the latest Omicron rise.
