The emotional effects the COVID pandemic has had on our students are substantial. Many of our students struggle with expressing their emotions in a healthy way and often struggle behaviorally. Our primary project is a school pet to motivate our students to stay self-regulated and ready to learn. We are planning to buy two geckos which students will be allowed to interact with as a positive reinforcer for appropriate behavior during the week. The supplies on this list are to provide a healthy and safe environment for the geckos, so that they are well cared for. We want to teach students about proper animal care so that they can take partial responsibility for the geckos’ wellbeing. We will have firm requirements for when students are allowed to interact with the geckos based on their behavior throughout the week. The items needed for the gecko environment are: two terrariums, one for school and one to keep them in at home on weekends; thermometer and humidity guages to keep the air quality high; terrarium flooring; mealworms for food; care manual to teach our students proper care; decorations for the geckos to hide when needed; water bowls for drinking from and for bathing for temperature regulation; heat lights for both day and night, for both school and home habitats; timers for the lamps; feeding tongs for feeding; and vitamin supplements. Additionally, I added fidgets and sensory tools to our list for our students to earn based on positive behavior. Those include a plush beanbag to use in our mindfulness room; ocean wave sensory ceiling light for the mindfulness room; squeeze and stretch balls for anger management; popit bracelets to personally earn and keep; and sensory stretch bracelets to earn and keep.
