Due to Covid, many students have been distance learning the last few years. They have not been able to check out books from the library. They have had little experience with novels and don't like reading in general. With a classroom set of novels, I will be able to help fill in their reading gaps, as well as instill a lifelong love of reading. Most of my students are English Language Learners. School is the only place they speak English. They come from diverse backgrounds, and have unique perspectives which make our discussions richer. We have been pushed to use a reading basal that does not meet their needs. I want to not only teach them to read, but to love reading! I want to give them rich literature that can both help them become better readers, but also instill a lifelong love of reading. With a high quality set of grade appropriate novels, I can help them reach their potential. I have used novels in the past, and the students have not only loved reading them, but also made huge growth in test scores and and understating of core concepts.
