Middle school students are already dealing with an array of complicated emotions. When you combine it with the stress and anxiety of the Covid-19 pandemic, you have a virtual tornado of emotions. It is difficult for students to focus on learning when so much is going on inside their minds and bodies. When students feel increased anxiety, some of them ask to leave the class, visit the school counselor, complain of physical ailments, or simply need to go for a walk. Some of my students are at a point where they refuse to come to school because of increased anxiety or depression. Having a supportive, safe place in my classroom will help them regulate their emotions while remaining in the classroom. I would like to establish a place in my classroom where students can take 5 minutes to sit in a rocking chair or at a table, listen to calming sounds, interact with a fidget toy or simple wooden puzzle. This short break will help them reset and be able to return to learning. Headphones give them a chance to access online material in the classroom and to block-out distracting noises. The headphones also allow them to access speech-to-text options on Chromebooks, have tests and assignments read out loud, and submit audio and video recordings of tasks. Ultimately, students need to feel safe and supported as they work through their challenges, but they also need to remain in the classroom so they don't miss instruction. By acknowledging their emotions and struggles and supporting their efforts to work through them, we can help students be more successful.
