Throughout the pandemic, I have seen students go through a range of emotions from excitement in being back to trepidation in returning to insecurity in their skills. In the classroom, I want to support both the education and emotional wellbeing of my students by providing a positive, growth mindset environment in which they can feel safe to make errors, pursue their reading goals, and connect their English language arts knowledge to the outside world.
A calming corner and easy access to their necessary tools will help support my students in being prepared for our everyday challenges and feel more confident in our Covid-pandemic environment. The calming corner will be surrounded by bookshelves and a table to hold the magazine racks. On the shelves, students will find small fidget toys as well as word search books that allow them to take a moment to recenter. Baskets will hold small wooden puzzles that activate visual problem solving to allow a student to change tasks for a break while writing. Timers there will also help the students self-manage their refocusing time.
For everyday use, the partial classroom set of headphones will be used when we are using a teaching video or making a video on our learning platform. The purchase of these headphones will ensure that we have access to them even when all sets are checked out from the library. In order to allow students easier access to materials, the baskets will be used at each table center to hold classroom materials like whiteboards and pencils. By having these materials available, students can feel more confident and prepared to learn.
