A lot of my students don't have access to books and reading resources at home, and because of COVID-19, my students have gotten very behind in their reading skills. I teach at a school that is a free K-6 public charter school in West Valley City, Utah. My 2nd grade class includes English Language Learners, low-income students, and students who attend daycare and after-school programs directly before and after the school day. Over 90% of my students qualify for free and reduced-price lunches. Families of my students typically work multiple jobs and struggle getting basic needs met. Despite this, my students come to school excited and ready to learn new things because they feel safe in my classroom!
