The resources I have requested (100% cotton yarns, wooden knitting needles/crochet hooks, storage totes, yarn ball winders) - and the learning processes experienced while learning to knit and/or crochet in order to create small, joyful DIY projects - should directly help students and support their social, emotional, and mental well-being as well partially ease impacts of interrupted learning as a result of COVID-19 by expanding student conscious and subconscious skills in: Self-calming, practicing patience with themselves/others, slowing down their lives when things become too hectic, organizing, planning (as well as follow-through) and - very importantly - by using renewable and/or recyclable tools and materials to create useful and/or artistic items for a variety of projects that they can be proud of and celebrate individually and together; especially because they will design and create these projects together, socially interact and help each other in a safe place with low anxiety, resulting in having fun, general relaxation and NOT needing to worry about a grade for a class! These items - after being passed on to others - when no longer of use, will NOT be added to hills of toxic garbage made of artificial components around the world! This can help students recognize that even in such small things, they can play a direct role in transforming the immediate world around themselves into a more environmentally safe place to live - in addition, doing so can foster growing self-confidence and alleviate some of their own existential anxiety connected to feelings of helplessness and vulnerability in face of so many things they are not in control of in their lives during these teenage years.
