Here at our school 6th grade is the last year of elementary school. It's a year to be leaders of the school community. Each year our 6th graders give back by helping lead Kinders to their bus, act as conflict management guides at k,1,2 recess, lead activities at assemblies, and leave a school improvement legacy project. This year we have started a reading program in partnership with the K, 1st, and 2nd-grade classrooms. Once a week each lower grade class has a 6th-grade student come to read them a picture book at their "carpet/story" time. So far it has been a huge success. The 6th graders are challenging themselves by reading in front of an entire class, building confidence, and facing some fears (public speaking). The younger students have been in awe and inspired to be a 6th-grade reader one day too. The lower grade teachers have also enjoyed seeing their old students and how far they have come. The only issue is the lack of picture books. I would like to add more picture books to my personal class library so that students have more variety and high-value choices to share. Our library does have some of these books but there are only so many and I want students to be able to practice in class, or at home and use them for my own lessons by having them on hand. Thank you for contributing to my classroom!
