It can be challenging for students to concentrate on school when outside influences negatively affect their lives. As a small, alternative high school with 100 high-risk students, my goal is to create a classroom that supports students emotional and social needs as well as academic studies. Sensory items, like the essential oil diffuser and Wobbly Chairs, offer a calming experience, while a Keurig machine would be used to incentivize work completion. Birthday cards are given to each student on their birthdays and are especially appreciated. When asked what games students would like to play on 'break days' Bingo was their game of choice - students will be excited to have a game with enough player cards for everyone in the class to join.
