My students often do not have insurance, so I can check their eye sight. If they do not pass I can them refer them and give them community resources. Income is also very limited for these families and can be decreased due to a parent quarantining/ isolating. The charts and eye occluders will help with the eye testing. A child who cannot see cannot learn. I also have included blood pressure cuffs so I can use these to take their vitals. High blood pressure can impact their vision. I have included many sensory aids in my project. Often my students are experiencing a lot of emotions during the school day and these have only been increased due to the pandemic. Having these tools, like Rubik’s cubes and kinetic sand, in my office can help them manage these and return back to class for much needed instruction time. By playing with these items my students are able to better express how they are feeling and then work through it. My students often struggle with food insecurity. This year especially we are seeing more children asking for snacks and I suspect the emotional toll of COVID is to blame. The candy, chips, nuts, and juice boxes will help to give them the snacks. Often times, I give a snack to a student that helps their "upset stomach" (emotional response) and they go back to class. This is where we want them to be, getting instruction time. I would also like to use the food items to enhance learning about hand hygiene and proper diet. My students are the best and these items will help them cope with the strong feelings they are having because of the pandemic.
