My classroom is very interactive. Whether it is reading Romeo and Juliet and the students are jumping out of their seats to begin a sword fight or reading a poem that they want to put their whole body into to convey the meaning. Again, I have a huge Polynesian ratio of students who are used to putting their whole selves into art interpretation and communication (think the Haka). Traditional seating just does not work. It is confining and limits my students. By having high top tables, they are able to freely move their upper body and quickly or easily get up out of their seats. By having a table with benches, it creates a closer sense of community and belonging that will make students more comfortable and open. Lap desks allows those students who are more comfortable on the ground to still be able to work efficiently. Overall, it will make the classroom a more welcoming environment and show my students that I care about their wants and needs.
