The materials I chose for this project will help my students gain more access to more learning materials that are evidence-based. I chose a couple of different social, emotional, and life skills books that have ideas and tools for lesson plans that are more engaging and enriching. For example, the Social Emotional Learning Textbook provides many lesson plans that engage students to learn appropriate social behavior. Although there are quite a few worksheets, they help promote discussions and give students a visual. Social discussions are an important part of teaching social skills. They will also benefit me as a teacher as there are teaching strategies that help me to be a better teacher to my students. As a new teacher, it can be difficult to create a whole curriculum from scratch, so these tools will be extremely beneficial. I teach social, emotional, executive functioning, and life skills to students with disabilities, this is even more crucial now due to the effects of COVID-19 where students lost out on a lot of social interaction time. Students deserve to have an enriching, hands-on activities. I also chose game materials to help students get excited about learning and break up the monotony of worksheets. Students learn best when they are having fun and being engaged in an activity. For example, I ordered a quiz answer game buzzer. This can be used in a variety of ways. It can be used to help students review materials that we have already learned, or it can be used in general lessons where they buzz for the correct answer. This can help students be more engaged in the activity, and have fun while learning. It can also teach additional skills such as learning to work within a team, compromise, how to handle losing or winning, and other skills.
