I have noticed that since covid, students are coming into my class with gaps in their learning. I work hard to offer them as much as I can while they are in my preschool class. I know there is only so much I can do. I want to do more to close the gaps for some students and to enhance learning for students who are more advanced. One way I can try to close gaps in student skills is to create supplementary materials that they can explore. The sillouette machine will help me quickly prepare materials that students can use in class to help enhance their learning. Another way I will utilize these materials is to create materials I can send home with students. I also ordered a complete set of multicultural families. I teach students from various cultural backgrounds. They notice when dolls in class look like them or not. I want my students to feel welcome and included, and I want our toys to represent that. This year I have been receiving training in the positive impact of phonological and phonemic awareness on later reading skills. Recently, a teacher modeled how she uses materials in these alphabet tubs to work on syllables and initial sound segmentation. I would like to do this with my students. This is a great hands on way to help kids explore different sounds in the alphabet and segmenting words into initial sounds or syllables. I really feel like these tubs will help my students in their Phonological Awareness and Alphabet knowledge. This year I have taught in person and sometimes virtually. Already I have activities in mind that will support learning in social-emotional, alphabetic principles, art, science, math, and self-help skills. I am excited for the opportunity to expand my teaching capacity through the use of these materials.
