The stress of world events and circumstances have added a whole extra layer to the experiences our students are enduring. These items will first create a space for students to enter into and immediately feel comfortable, safe, and seen (couch, weighted blanket). Then, these items will help facilitate genuine social emotional growth, coping skill development, interpersonal reflection, and identity development (journal prompts, mindfulness cards, teen reflection cards). Following up with motivational items that help engage students in academic interventions (stickers, erasers). I love this job because it offers so much opportunity to support a child's life; this project gives me more tools to just that! These items are a good blend of social-emotional supports, individual supports, and academic supports. As a second year School Counselor, these few years of my work have been consumed by the stressors of the COVID19 pandemic. There has been a constant state of worry, anxiety, and stress in the students I work with and the staff I work alongside. My office has proven to be a sanctuary of peace, where students and staff know that they can come in to cry, scream, vent, or just breathe. On any given day; I might be in crisis mode, working to calm a child or support a teens mental health needs. I might lead small groups. I might be helping students cope through family changes, social changes, world wide changes! I might be hosting meetings with parents, teachers, admins. I might be facilitating mediations with friends. I might guide a student through future decisions about careers and colleges. For all of these moments, it is critical that I first have a comfortable and welcoming environment, followed with genuine and authentic human connection. The second, I have covered. The first, can always use improvements!
