Since the Covid Pandemic and subsequent lockdown, there has been a dramatic increase in anxiety and depression in students as noted by the American Pediatric Association. Students need to be provided with a way to handle these new stresses and anxieties that they are experiencing. I want every student at my school to know that they matter, the anxiety/ mental health problems they face are our problems and together we can turn their weaknesses into strengths. Allowing students to have a few moments in a "wellness room"to decompress and to reset themselves will help them be able to navigate a world that has been turned upside down on them due to the Pandemic. Refocusing their attention to a coloring page, a fidget device, or even providing a chewy snack can transform a debilitating moment into a conquering one. I believe that every student despite the challenges they may have deserve a chance to learn and to be successful. Mental health issues exasperated by the Covid-19 pandemic should not be a roadblock to their success story. Many stories just need a little help along the way, and access to "wellness room" activities will help them to believe in themselves, and to take those first steps to conquering the issues that have emerged in their lives. I believe that every student of our school has potential, anxiety and depression should not be roadblocks to their success.
