As an English teacher, I am mandated to teach multiple types of literature to fulfill the ELA standards. Typically, I make my best attempt to tie the literature to something relevant or related to events in the world. I like to teach things that involve multiculturalism, inclusion, justice. The purpose of this project is to bring a wider array of literature with a more modern relevance to them. While older novels that are in the public domain have context that is still relevant, more recent publications tend to have a more direct tie with the world in which the author is living, and the events, topics, and cultural mindsets analogous to what is happening around them. My students respond so well to multiculturalism and inclusion, that I feel this is an opportunity to engage that curiosity and foster a willingness to acquire and consume the knowledge that they typically might not get.
