The resources for my project will provide tools for reading interventions with students that are not reaching benchmark for foundational reading skills. The tools will help support the use of multi-sensory instruction for elevated brain development of reading skills. The use of these resources provide the opportunity for engaging activities to illustrate segmenting of language and orthographic mapping.
When a student is instructed utilizing a multi-sensory approach they are activating key areas of their brain and developing necessary pathways for long term reading success. We see in all reader the "light bulb" moment happen when we connect reading activities to hands on movement which is what the magnetic wands and chips will facilitate. In addition the Elkonin boxes and chips create a tactile approach to word segmenting of sounds for phonemic awareness and development.
We have also requested a variety of Orton Gillingham resource materials because as students develop these foundational skills we want to have proper decodable passages for fluency practice. Repetition in reading practice supports brain development that the other activities support. Collectively, multi-sensory practice and appropriate decodable passages will help to solidify the brain pathways for long-term success in students that need more support.
