Many of my kindergarten students come from disadvantaged homes and frequently have trauma in their lives. Music, rhythm, dance, and play can all help student recenter when the are feeling the effects of childhood trauma. Maslow before Blooms. Students are not able to learn when they are not regulated. Although I cannot help students through their traumas, I can help them feel safe in the classroom and I can use these materials to help them reset when they are overwhelmed. These activities will also build a sense of community and safety in the classroom, as well as building the fine motor muscles needed for writing, manipulating objects, etc.
