I will be using the materials requested to build a classroom environment that encourages independent learning and confidence. By reading social-emotional-focused books about kindness, self-confidence, happiness, patience, and perseverance my students will learn the expectations for a safe classroom environment and independent motivated learning. Working side by side or near others in small group areas based around the room, students will be using the wobble chairs and wobble seat pads to get comfortable which will reduce distractions. Sitting at desks and in chairs for too long becomes uncomfortable and boring but by having options away from the desk, students will be able to stay more productive during independent practice times. The sand timers will be strategically placed around the classroom so students can learn to gauge time in a non distractive way. Timers will also be used to time math facts and reading fluency as well as create motivation to quickly clean up during transitions and the end of the day. I will also be using the sand timers as a visual calm down cue for those students who need a moment away from the group. I've also just finished teaching a fractions unit with paper manipulatives. Fractions are frustrating enough that good quality manipulatives would make a huge improvement in my students success and enjoyment of using hands-on materials.
