Cultivating the love of reading and encouraging secondary students to become lifelong learners may seem like a challenging task, but when equipped with appealing content, the reward far supersedes the task. Texts should reflect the reader’s demographics and interests. Texts should entice its readers and transform reluctant readers into avid, lifetime readers. With help from Donors Choose, all students on campus will have access to the classroom library and the ability to check out or reserve their favorite texts. Reading for pleasure is the main goal; however, multiple copies were requested for book groups and/or paired readings. The only means of accountability students will have is, after reading, they will create a pre-recorded text talk accessible through a QR code inserted inside the text. Additional QR codes will adorn the campus walls inspiring others to “check the text out.” Theoretically, the buzz of “must reads” ignites a paradigm shift from literacy naysayers to literacy advocates. Your contribution is key to transforming today’s students into future life long readers. empower
