We are working to build a strong foundation in number sense. This seems to be an area that children are lacking. As second graders, this is the first year they have attended a full day of school. It has been a strain for many of them. I believe that we can help them along and make learning a joy! Rekenreks will be one of the tools that I hope to use as I implement routines into my math instruction which focus specifically on building number sense. They will, hopefully, help children build automaticity in subitizing and quantifying numbers as they add and subtract. These tools will help children build a strong foundation in part-part-whole, pattern counting, fact families, and more!
