First grade is a magical year. It is the year that students go from reading pattern books like, "Look at me. I am running" to reading early chapter books. As students grow into readers, their appetite for books become insatiable. This is especially true in the spring. In the spring we read series chapter books. Series chapter books are books like Frog and Toad and Fox and Friends. Over the past few years, I have been trying to introduce students to books that represent people from different cultures. This way, students learn from the experiences of others. This year we will read about a girl who wears a cochlear implant, a Mexican American girl from Los Angeles and Yasmin who is a Muslim Pakistani American girl! When we discover a new series, I cannot keep those books on the shelves. Students become so excited that they beg to borrow my teacher books. This project will help me put more books in kid's hands.
