In this high-poverty area, students often stay after school to study and work on homework. The snacks they receive (very gratefully, by the way) are not healthy, so their learning, energy, and emotions can get out of sync. It's great to be able to give students a healthy snack while they continue to work after school. More than physical nutrition, however, is the socio-emotional boost our students receive by staying after school; Maslow hit it on the head when he theorized that students can't reach their potential without their foundational needs met first. Many stay because it's a better option than being home. It's safer, it's warmer, and it's more fulfilling.
