One of the biggest goals I have as an educator is to create a welcoming, safe, and comfortable learning environment for my students. Over the last few years, I have seen, and been inspired by, colleagues introducing student choice into their seating arrangements. I have joined them in celebrating success stories of shifts in student engagement and performance. I want this for my students, too! With the need to contact trace and socially distance during the COVID-19 pandemic, flexible seating has become tricky, but not impossible. I would love to provide students the ability to choose their seats to promote a comfortable and emotionally safe environment, especially with the worries and anxiety many of them have concerning COVID-19 and associated issues . The last thing students need to be worried about when they come to school is being asked to sit in an uncomfortable desk for 8 hours. I firmly believe that when students are comfortable, (physically, mentally and emotionally) in a space, they will be able to maximize their ability to not only learn and grow, but to help others do the same. Because of this belief, I am requesting classroom furniture items to meet the physical and emotional needs of my students, which will free them to focus on learning and set them on the road to success.
